Community gather for school cabin opening in Swanage
St Mary’s Catholic Primary School in Swanage has celebrated the opening of its new cabin on site with a special ceremony.
A number of school pupils gathered for the opening, along with head teacher Maria Gadston, plus Kevin Langdon, Liz Bowden and Ann Tomes from Swanage Carnival, and Dan Bateman, Barratt Homes marketing manager.
Swanage’s parish priest, Father Tim, blessed the cabin, before it was officially opened for use as the children performed a traditional ribbon cutting.
The groundworks for the cabin were completed for the school by Barratt Homes, a donation of £3500 from Swanage Carnival went towards the cabin costs along with a significant donation from the Talbot Village Trust.
Headteacher, Maria Gadston said, “Space for the children to learn and receive support is always at a premium, and we were extremely grateful for the offer from Barratt Homes and the Swanage Carnival to contribute significantly to the cost of building a new cabin on the school grounds. The children are very excited at having this space open for use and it’s a great opportunity to vary how we run lessons and activities.”
Carnival volunteer, Kevin Langdon said, “A huge part of the Swanage Carnival is to raise money for charitable causes locally, and this project is a perfect example of how we put that money to good use. We are very proud to be able to support the children in our community and give something of real value to the staff and pupils at St Mary’s Catholic Primary School.”
Barratt Homes Sales director, Michelle Storer said, “Swanage is a such a beautiful place, there’s a strong feel of community here and we think it’s so important so support local people in any way we can. When we heard about the school and the opportunity to build a new cabin on site we jumped at the chance to build the foundations and help create something that children can use for many years to come.”
The cabin is now open as part of the vital teaching facilities at the school, a tribute to the strong community support in our town.
