Dementia Friendly Purbeck

A single local charity selected by the sitting Swanage Carnival Chairman to receive special focus for that specific year.

Dementia Friendly Purbeck
Founded in 2015/16 by local residents determined to improve support for people living with dementia, Dementia Friendly Purbeck has become a vital part of the community. Its first major aim was to raise funds for a Community Admiral Nurse for the Purbeck area — a goal successfully achieved in 2017. The organisation then went on to support the Admiral Nurse service for six years before responsibility for the role was taken over by Dorset NHS.
Since then, Dementia Friendly Purbeck has continued to provide support for people living with dementia and their carers through a range of community initiatives. These include weekly music and singing groups in Swanage and Wareham, a community allotment in Wareham, and support for the Forget Me Not sessions run by Age UK in both towns.

The organisation is now close to reaching its latest fundraising target to help finance a second Admiral Nurse for the area. Working in partnership with Dementia UK and Dorset NHS, it hopes the new nurse will soon be in post, bringing valuable support to even more local people and families.

In addition, Dementia Friendly Purbeck is collaborating with the local Development Trust to establish a welcoming drop-in space at the Focus Centre, creating another hub where those affected by dementia can access support, companionship and community connection.
