The Cellar Bar Gig Racing challenge brings power and precision to the bay, as crews work in perfect rhythm to drive their boats forward. From the shore, you can see the coordination and determination in every stroke.
It’s a true test of teamwork, with each crew relying on timing and trust to maintain speed. The sound of encouragement carries across the water as spectators follow the race from start to finish.
Sporting, focused and impressive to watch, it’s a highlight for water sports fans.
This is our annual Carnival Challenge and always a crowd favourite. Local teams of six have been learning the art of rowing a Cornish Pilot Gig with the help of volunteers from Swanage Sea Rowing Club, all leading up to a fast-paced sprint tournament on the night.
Heats of two or three gigs will race close to the beach from Ocean Bay to The Mowlem slipway, giving spectators a great view of the action. Each team will race twice, with the fastest times progressing to the finals.
The entry fee is £42 per team.
Training sessions and registration will be available at Swanage Sea Rowing Club during the week beginning 15 June 2026.
