We’re nearly ready !!

Posted on 2nd June, 2024

The history of Swanage Carnival can be dated back to the mid 1800’s, where it started as a highlight of the sailing regatta at the time. Over the years it has grown into the 8 day, entertainment and competition filled week that we now know and love.

This year Swanage Carnival is coming back with a stomp from Saturday 27th July until Saturday 3rd August, celebrating the local area with a “Jurassic Rocks” theme. An annual highlight, the Procession on Sunday 28th July will see floats designed by local groups parade around the town and showcase their dino-themed inspirational concoctions. This year’s theme of ‘Jurassic Rocks’ is sure to get the crowds roaring with a special appearance from “Rexy” the Dinosaur from the film “Night at the Museum 2” !

Swanage Carnival is run solely by volunteers, who dedicate their time and efforts to putting on the South Coast’s Premier Carnival, not only providing 8 days of fun filled entertainment for all to enjoy, but raising money throughout the week to donate to the chosen charities and local good causes within the community. This year the volunteers will be raising money for a total of 23 charities and local good causes during the week. Last year Swanage Carnival donated a total of £27,650 and are hopeful that they will be able to give an even greater level of support this year to those organisations that are so greatly appreciative. Since 2005, Swanage Carnival has given away a whopping total of £408,652 in 152 donations.

Last year saw some fantastic new events, including Beer Pong, the Fire Engine Pull and the competition for the best shop window display in town. We’re absolutely delighted that all of these additions will be returning to the Carnival line up again this year as well as a number of other new and exciting events, including An Interactive Dinosaur show, Dinosaur Derby, BMX Stunt Show, Acrobats, live entertainers and silent disco . All of this is of course in addition to the old school favourites, including 3 fabulous fire work displays, live music entertainment ever night and the infamous BINGO competition. The Swanage Carnival souvenir programme will be landing in a shop near you sometime in June, with all of the information to plan a fun filled week.

2023 saw the launch of the Swanage Carnival App which featured updates throughout the week on any changes to the schedule. The App can be downloaded from the App store, and contains all the entry forms to get yourself registered for your favourite events as well as other useful information.

With over 108 events and activities crammed into 8 days, the Swanage Carnival Crew are on the lookout for more recruits to help deliver this experience and raise money for this years deserving causes. Volunteers can do as much or as little as they want, from bucket shaking to penny counting, pint pouring to litter picking, there’s something for everyone.
