Yee-haw! Swanage Carnival gets ‘wild’ about its 2026 theme

Volunteers posing on the platform at Swanage station in Dorset, needed little encouragement to get dressed up in double denim and ride inflatable horses at the official launch of Swanage Carnival’s theme for 2026.
Grabbing their stetsons and cowboy boots with relish, the Swanage Carnival team announced it’s going to turn the town into ‘A Wacky Western in Carnival Canyon’ for eight days from Saturday 25th July to Saturday 1st August 2026.

Just another normal day in Swanage!
“Lots of scope for fun and games”
The country western theme was chosen after proving popular on social media, promising the delights of check shirts, rhinestones, and line dancing, but hopefully not bar brawls and shoot outs!
Secretary of Swanage Carnival Kevin Langdon said:
“After the success of Cirque du Swanage – our circus theme for 2025 – and Jurassic Rocks in 2024, which proved a popular choice for everyone who loves dinosaurs, we really had to come up with something very different for 2026.
“The idea of a Wild West theme was floated on our social media and it just took off from there. But we always like to add a special Swanage Carnival twist, so we came up with ‘A Wacky Western in Carnival Canyon’.
“It offers lots of scope for fun and games throughout carnival week and I’m sure Swanage will embrace the theme – who hasn’t always wanted to be in a Western? Our new chair of Swanage Carnival Neal Diffey has already got very used to being called the sheriff!”

Inflatable horses at Swanage station
A video to launch the theme was filmed at Swanage station and despite the pouring rain, there was plenty of enthusiasm to join in the shoot.
Of course, as it was Swanage Carnival, there had to be inflatable horses, which is probably a first for the heritage railway.
Kevin added:
“I’d like to thank Swanage Railway for being such good sports and letting us film at the station. It made for an ideal backdrop and it’s good that in Swanage, charitable organisations all try to help each other. We are very lucky!”

If you can’t wait until July there’s the Swanage Carnival Classic Motor Show in April

Vehicles from all eras head to Swanage for the annual classic motor show
Classic motor show returns
While the carnival itself isn’t until the summer, the Carnival Classic Motor Show will take place at Swanage Main Beach car park on Sunday 26th April 2026.
Since 2022, it’s become the official curtain raiser to the carnival and helps to raise funds in the run up to the main event.
Owners of classic vehicles from all years and genres are invited to take a leisurely drive down to Swanage and breathe in the sea air with a guaranteed parking spot in the centre of the town. It also makes for an interesting day out for anyone interested in vintage motors and engines.

Sponsorship and advertising
It costs more than £240,000 each year to run the Swanage Carnival and preparations for this year’s event are already well underway.
It’s funded primarily through sponsorship and donations, and once all essential costs are covered, every additional pound raised is reinvested directly into local charities and good causes.
Businesses and individuals can sponsor events and advertise in the famous carnival programme and the team is always keen to hear from new people who want to get involved.
